From Tuesday 21st August to Saturday 1st September 2001
From Tuesday 21st August to Saturday 1st September, Signal Arts Centre is showing an exhibition of work by two local artists - sculpture by Jackie Aherne and prints by Detta Riney.
Jackie Aherne, originally from Dublin, studied sculpture at D.L.S.A.D. and trained at Brennan Stoneware in Dun Laoghaire. For many years she worked primarily as a performance/installation artist, however, she says 'Since my early twenties I have worked with clay, but it is only in the last year that I have worked consistently, nearly every day.... If I am to make pots that are 'inside me' it will take that level of commitment.' Using both Stoneware and Raku techniques, Jackie produces bowls as organic and individual as woodland fungi, pots like opening flowers and bottles as unique and idiosyncratic as people.
Detta Riney, also originally from Dublin, graduated from South Manchester College in 1994. She has previously exhibited in Manchester and at Signal in 1994. Using dry point etching and silk screen printing, Detta produces subtly textured and richly coloured abstract images which express emotional and psychic realities.
