From Tuesday 20th January to Saturday 31st January 2004
Signal Arts Centre is showing the first solo exhibition of work by prize winning artist Nicky Cheevers.
Working in oils, enamel, plaster, varnish, encaustic, charcoal and pages from old books, Cheevers creates abstract images which 're-examine and re-think the human body.' Cheevers says 'I have attempted to remove any trace of the literal body by creating a corporeal, interior space, a visceral, fluid, disintegrating mass… which… challenges the pre-formed notions of what is beautiful… a re-configuration of self that dissolves and fuses with the organic.'
'The actual physical process is direct translation of the psychological process. Through layering and the constant peeling back and slicing into new surfaces, the bodily space becomes fragmented, transcending boundaries and giving the work an illusion of memory.'
Opening Reception: Thursday 22nd January 7-9pm
